Choose the feeder family before buying parts
There are two distinct A1 routes. Keeping AMS lite means keeping the documented single-unit, four-color arrangement. Moving to AMS, AMS 2 Pro or AMS HT means using the dedicated A1-series hub. The current U.S. product FAQ names SA013 for that hub; the connection guide supplies the installation conditions. Read those sources together rather than treating a bare list of compatible names as a complete shopping list.
For an owner who already has an enclosed AMS-family unit, the useful question is whether the required hub and the correct cables are available, not whether the printer name appears in an old compatibility chart. For an owner keeping AMS lite, additional enclosed units are not a way to supplement its existing channels in the same connected configuration. Choose one route before collecting adapters.

Why the hub must be the A1-series version
Bambu Lab explains the difference in terms of filament feeding. With AMS lite, the printer's extruder pulls the filament; AMS lite does not provide the assisted feeding used by the other AMS units during printing. The enclosed AMS-family motors push filament, and the A1-series hub regulates the resulting tension so that the extruder can work accurately. The hub is therefore part of the feeding arrangement, rather than merely a connector that happens to fit.
The guide specifically warns against substituting another printer series' filament buffer or AMS hub. A familiar component from an X1 or P1 arrangement does not establish an A1 connection: the manufacturer warns of malfunction or buffer damage. If the part identity is unclear, stop the installation and verify the A1-series designation in the official guide before connecting it.

Firmware and device switching are part of compatibility
For the hub connection covered by this guide, the printer firmware must be 01.07.00.00 or later. This is an installation requirement for the described AMS route; it should not be rewritten as a new minimum for every existing AMS lite setup. Check the actual printer version before following the hub instructions, rather than assuming a recent purchase includes the required version.
When removing AMS lite, the official sequence begins with switching off the printer. When changing the feeder family, disconnect the original AMS device, switch the AMS type, and then connect the new device. The distinction matters because the guide warns that connecting the replacement before changing its type can cause communication loss or errors. A physically attached cable alone does not complete the configuration.
Use the illustrated manufacturer procedure for the actual mounting and disconnection work. This page explains the decision points and the documented order; it does not replace the guide's model-specific diagrams or provide an improvised repair procedure if the printer reports an error.
Keep the PTFE and cable routes distinct
The official single-unit route uses a PTFE tube from the AMS to the hub and another from the hub to the filament hub above the toolhead. The electrical route is different: the 4-pin cable connects the printer to the A1-series hub, while the 6-pin cable connects that hub to the AMS. Keeping these two routes separate makes the diagram easier to check and prevents the word 'hub' from obscuring which component each cable reaches.
The guide distinguishes the approximately 600 mm tube for A1 from the approximately 520 mm tube for A1 mini. Its illustration may use the smaller printer, but the tube-selection note still distinguishes the models. Use the A1-specific part in the described arrangement instead of taking every illustrated dimension as interchangeable.
The manufacturer also excludes the 4-in-1 PTFE adapter at the toolhead connection for this A1-series setup. PTFE connects directly to the toolhead filament hub. An adapter that provides additional apparent ports is not evidence that the printer supports an additional feeder arrangement; check the documented route rather than adding a splitter to solve a compatibility limit.
Check cable generation when reusing an AMS
A cable's pin count is not the complete compatibility check. For AMS 2 Pro or AMS HT, Bambu Lab says to use the 6-pin cable supplied with that device. The guide warns that the first-generation AMS cable may cause communication issues with those newer units. That means a cable borrowed from an older installation should not be accepted merely because its connector can be inserted.
The documented compatibility is asymmetric: the second-generation cable can be used with first-generation AMS, while the reverse substitution is the one carrying the communication warning. Before moving equipment between printers, identify the AMS generation and the cable supplied for it. If provenance is uncertain, verify the accessory with the manufacturer instead of treating all 6-pin cables as one product.
Multiple units do not mean mixed feeder families
The A1-series hub supports up to four units drawn from AMS, AMS 2 Pro and AMS HT in any combination. This is a unit-count limit for the named family. It does not by itself provide a universal color total for every combination, and this page does not calculate one by assuming that every type has identical feeding capacity.
AMS lite remains outside that combined arrangement: the guide does not support mixing it with the other AMS units. It also says that A1 series cannot connect an AMS and an external spool simultaneously. These are separate boundaries. They should not be interpreted as saying the printer can never use an external spool on its own, or as permission to keep an unused feeder attached while selecting another one.
Separate filament feeding from drying
A supported feeder connection does not settle the power arrangement for drying. For drying, the manufacturer's guide instructs connecting the AMS 2 Pro power adapter or the AMS HT power cable. Follow that documented setup and verify the official accessory for the exact device. This instruction is the setup to follow here; it is not a general claim about the performance of every alternative power configuration.
The active print job creates another boundary. AMS 2 Pro or AMS HT units involved in the printing process cannot dry during that job; this includes units that might be used for automatic refill. Units outside the feeding task can be used for drying. Check participation in the job, including refill, rather than deciding that an apparently idle unit is free to dry simply because it is not feeding at that instant.
Use current sources and finish the pre-purchase check
Older 'A1 only works with AMS lite' answers describe an incomplete basis for today's decision. The current U.S. product record names the hub-enabled AMS-family route, and the manufacturer connection guide supplies the firmware, cable and mixing conditions. The practical improvement is to check those conditions together; replacing the old answer with an unconditional 'all AMS works' would lose the limits that make the current answer useful.
Before ordering, verify the exact feeder family, the A1-series hub identity, the printer firmware, and the cable generation. Check package contents separately: a documented compatibility relationship does not establish which accessories a particular seller includes. If a part cannot be identified or the arrangement falls outside the cited guide, stop and use Bambu Lab's official support instructions.
