Measure the pet before choosing the door

For several pets, PetSafe tells owners to measure the largest while it stands comfortably. Measure chest height from above the shoulder to the lowest ribcage point, and chest width across the front. Both measurements must meet the official size chart.

Do not choose Medium solely to obtain chip access if the pet’s measurements do not fit. Physical sizing and the Medium-cat implant condition are separate checks. Consult the manufacturer’s actual chart for the dimensions; the size name alone is not a measurement.

Medium and Large change more than the label

The Medium package includes a Medium Pet Door Key and uses 4 C-cell alkaline batteries. The Large package includes a Large key and uses 4 D-cell alkaline batteries. An optional SmartDoor power adapter is documented for either door.

Keep those package differences together when comparing listings: a door, its included identifier and its power supply are separate items to account for. The included-key description identifies what comes in the box; it is not a complete replacement-key compatibility chart.

Pet Door Key fallback: Microchip use is recommended for cats only; use the Pet Door Key for other pets. Paired Pet Door Keys provide access for dogs or cats. Available sizes: Medium · Large. Choose an identifier for this pet

A cat using the Medium door can use an implanted chip only when its chip type is on PetSafe’s supported list. Being microchipped, by itself, does not establish that route. The dedicated compatibility guide lists the supported formats.

Paired Pet Door Keys are documented for dogs and cats, so a cat does not have to use its implant. For pets outside the supported Medium-cat chip route, consider the key route and use PetSafe’s model-specific pairing instructions.

Plan the routine after choosing the hardware

My PetSafe offers per-pet schedules, remote lock or unlock, and door-use, lock and battery notifications. A household can therefore plan access around individual pets instead of treating the door as a single unchanging opening.

For an existing installation, go directly to the task you need: app controls for the routine, key checks for a pet that is not admitted, or the power guide for batteries and the adapter.
