Remove the key from the pet before testing
PetSafe starts this troubleshooting task by removing the Pet Door Key from the pet. Record whether the original failure involved that key or an implanted chip, and keep that identity consistent during the checks.
Package contents are not an exclusive replacement rule. The approach guide describes 3 key sizes. When hand-held testing unlocks the door but the pet’s approach does not, PetSafe suggests trying a larger key if a low pet’s key is outside detection. Use current accessory guidance, not a rule that the key’s size name must match the door.

Look for the power response
Wave a hand near the motion sensor to display the indicator lights. In PetSafe’s battery branch, solid blue is the expected battery indication; red or no lights directs the owner to replace the alkaline batteries. Match C-cell to Medium or D-cell to Large.
If the door uses the optional adapter, use the adapter-specific power branch instead. A battery indicator instruction is not a diagnosis of an adapter or reader. Keep the key off the pet during testing.

Check the allowed direction and pairing position
In Smart Mode, compare the pet’s settings with the intended direction: Full Access, In Only, Out Only or No Access. A paired key does not override No Access. For a chip, separately confirm the Medium-cat and chip-format conditions.
For key resyncing, PetSafe specifies about 8 inches from the door, at roughly the height where the pet wears it. Holding it too close can reduce detection range. Follow the pairing instructions rather than inventing a reset. Report whether it works by hand but fails when worn; that distinction directs support toward the actual detection problem.

Each answer stays within the facts and sources shown on this page.
01The key works in my hand but not on my pet. What should I report?
Report that exact difference, the key used and its worn height. When hand-held testing succeeds but the pet’s approach fails, PetSafe suggests trying a larger key if a low pet’s key is outside detection. It specifies pairing about 8 inches from the door at the intended wearing height. This symptom alone does not establish a failed reader.
